There are several different skin conditions that can potentially cause a rash. Some of the common triggers of a rash include:
- Cellulitis (bacterial infection that affects deep layers of the skin)
- Lichen planus (bumps that appear on the skin or inside the mouth)
- Pityriasis rosea (disease that causes groups of patches on your skin)
Depending on its cause, a skin rash may include some or all of the following characteristics:
- Groups of bumps or patches, or just a single area
- Itchy
- Painful
- Raised
- Red
- Warm to the touch
Treatments
Antibiotic Medication
If an infection has caused your rash, the dermatologist will likely prescribe an antibiotic medication to clear up the infection.
Topical Creams or Ointments
Your dermatologist may recommend an over-the-counter cream or ointment — or prescribe a medicated cream — that you need to apply directly to the affected skin at regular intervals.
Antihistamine Medication
Your dermatologist may recommend that you take oral (by mouth) antihistamine medication to help control any itching associated with your rash.
Tests
Physical Exam
Through a medical examination of your skin, as well as a thorough review of your health history, we can accurately determine the cause of your rash. Doing so will allow our dermatologists to formulate an effective treatment plan just for you.
