The Bascom Palmer Glaucoma Fellowship at Palm Beach Gardens is a one year, advanced clinical fellowship based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The program is offered through the San Francisco Match and is fully certified by the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Fellowship Compliance Committee (AUPO FCC). The program accepts two full-time clinical fellows each year.
Structure
The Bascom Palmer Glaucoma Fellowship at Palm Beach Glaucoma is a one-year clinical training program designed to provide comprehensive exposure to medical, laser, and surgical management of glaucoma in adult patients. In addition, fellows receive significant surgical exposure to comprehensive, complex, and refractive cataract surgery. Fellows work closely with three full-time glaucoma faculty in clinic and the operating room at Bascom Palmer in Palm Beach Gardens. The glaucoma division at Palm Beach Gardens is a very busy clinical and surgical practice with over 18,000 patient visits per year, and more that 2,100 surgeries per year.
Fellows rotate through four three-month blocks each with both clinic and surgery. Each fellow participates in a dedicated afternoon fellows clinic. Fellows also participate in a structured call schedule, including primary call coverage for established patients at Bascom Palmer Palm Beach Gardens.
Surgical Experience
Surgical training is a core strength of the Bascom Palmer Glaucoma Fellowship Program and consistently exceeds national benchmarks. Fellows complete on average 250-300 primary surgeries each as well as assist in about an additional 500-750 surgeries each (over 2000 surgeries amongst the three attendings), including incisional glaucoma surgeries (trabeculectomy, tube shunt, revisions), MIGS, cyclodestructive procedures, cataract surgery, and premium cataract surgery, including femto-assisted cataract surgery. Fellows also have exposure to complex combined cases through collaboration with cornea, vitreoretinal services. Fellows participate in the vast majority of procedures and serve as primary surgeon in volumes that significantly exceed AUPO reported national averages.Academics and Research Opportunities
Fellows benefit from the following didactic curriculum:
- Weekly Grand Rounds – in addition, fellows are required to present twice during their fellowship
- Bi-weekly glaucoma journal club
- Wet labs
- Medical education conferences at Bascom Palmer
- Clinical research and scholarly activity are strongly encouraged and supported. The glaucoma service has a longstanding track record of excellence in clinical research. Fellows receive mentorship aligned with individual career goals and benefit from departmental research resources, including the support of a full‑time biostatistician.
- Each fellow completes at least one research project, is encouraged to present at a major national meeting, and is expected to present at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Annual Research Symposium in June.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Eligibility for an unrestricted Florida medical license
- Completion of an ACGME accredited U.S. ophthalmology residency
- Successful completion of all USMLE steps
- Must not have any visa requirements (U.S. citizen or permanent resident)
