Frequently Asked Questions

What is an eye emergency? Page 1

An eye emergency may result in vision loss if not addressed quickly. A sudden change in vision, severe pain in or around the eye, trauma or injury to the eye, foreign objects in the eye, and chemical exposure are some of the most common ocular emergencies that require emergency care.

How do I know if I should go to the Emergency Department? Page 1

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute offers a virtual service to help patients identify if their ocular concerns are emergent. The Rapid Virtual Eye Care service is available during business hours on most days. Please visit RapidEyeCare.com for more information. However, if you feel you are having an ocular emergency, you should seek care immediately at our Emergency Department.

What is the wait time? Page 1

Due to the vast number of eye conditions we treat, your visit time will depend on the complexity of your case. Some diagnoses require diagnostic testing and treatment that may prolong your visit. All visits are walk-in; no appointment is required. Wait times are typically longest between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

How do I make follow-up visits? Page 1

When you are discharged from the Emergency Department, your physician will provide you with information regarding follow-up care. You can also call (305) 243-2020 to schedule your appointment.

Who can I contact with any questions or concerns? Page 1

You can log in to your patient portal at MyUHealthChart.com to communicate any concerns directly with your physician. For billing or other inquiries, please call the Emergency Department at (305) 326-6170 and follow the prompts.

What should I expect when I arrive? Page 1

Our goal is to attend to you as soon as possible. Patients are seen in order of complexity. Shortly after you arrive, you will see a nurse who will identify the severity of your symptoms. You will then see a physician who will conduct a medical screening exam. You may undergo additional testing to determine and/or treat your eye concern if necessary.

How can I provide feedback about my Emergency Department visit? Page 1

You will receive a survey from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute after your visit. Please complete and return the survey. Your feedback will help us continue to deliver quality patient care.

How to Prevent Eye Injuries

Eye injuries can be largely prevented by following the tips below.

  • Wear protective eyewear when doing activities that involve objects moving at high speed, during high impact sports, or when using powerful chemicals
  • Wear protective eyewear if you are making home improvements, mowing the lawn, and trimming plants and trees to prevent debris from getting into your eyes
  • Maintain clean hands
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
  • Change contact lenses and contact lens solution as instructed
  • Do not sleep wearing your contact lenses
  • Limit the use of sharp objects by young children
  • Always use sunglasses with UV protection when outdoors
  • Never place a part of your body directly over a firework or hold a firework in your hand when lighting. Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.
