Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Observership Programs
The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute offers comprehensive research and clinical observership programs in conjunction with the International Medicine Institute’s William J. Harrington Medical Training Programs. Designed for qualified U.S. and international physicians and medical students seeking to improve their expertise in ophthalmic subspecialties, these programs provide an immersive observational experience focused on enhancing knowledge and skills in specialized areas of ophthalmology.
All observership programs are strictly observational and do not involve direct patient care. Participation is contingent upon approval and availability.

- Cornea and external diseases
- Glaucoma
- Retina
- Neuro-ophthalmology
- Oculoplastics
- Pathology
- Pediatric ophthalmology

Program Activities
Visitors will have the opportunity to observe:
- Faculty-led activities and procedures
- Surgical procedures across subspecialties
- Scheduled departmental conferences
- Weekly Grand Rounds presentations
- Faculty lectures and educational sessions
Requirements
International observers must demonstrate conversational proficiency in English to ensure effective participation in all program activities. Both the clinical and research observership programs have specific requirements, fees, and application procedures. Acceptance is competitive and based on availability. All programs require advanced planning due to processing times; therefore, we encourage applicants to begin the application process well in advance. Please contact the appropriate program coordinator early in your planning process to ensure adequate time for application review and approval.
