Hemifacial spasm and blepharospasm are uncommon, chronic and disabling medical conditions. Both disorders result in constant, uncontrollable blinking of the eyes, interfering with your ability to participate in or enjoy many day-to-day activities. The highly trained ophthalmologists at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, part of the University of Miami Health System, are experienced in using Botox® (botulinum toxin) injections for successful treatment of these conditions. The goal of this treatment is to relax or weaken the facial muscles that are causing the involuntary spasms around your eyes and lower face.

Cosmetic treatments offered by our experts at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute vary from the least invasive topical treatments, to injectables, lasers, and surgery. Each treatment works toward the same goal of rejuvenation for both men and women.

Who is a Candidate?

If you looking to refresh the look of your face and skin, consider undergoing a cosmetic non-surgical enhancement.

If you have hemifacial spasm or blepharospasm, you may be a candidate to receive Botox (botulinum toxin) injections to help manage your condition. Speak with your ophthalmologist to find out if this treatment option is the best choice for you.

What to Expect

Non-surgical cosmetic enhancements are performed in our office. You can expect to go home that same day, with minimal downtime.

Your ophthalmologist uses a tiny needle to inject a small amount of Botox into various areas of your eyelids and brows. Because the needle never comes near your eye, there is no danger of puncturing the eye during the procedure. This procedure is done right in your doctor’s office in a matter of minutes.

Within three days, you will notice the full effects of the Botox for your blinking condition. Injecting small amounts of Botox into the precise nerves slows the rate and force of your blinking, effectively and safely reducing symptoms for usually about three or four months. You will need subsequent injections after this time.
