Sylvester is an NCI-designated cancer center. The National Cancer Institute has reaffirmed us as South Florida's only NCI-designated cancer center. For patients, this designation translates into greater access to leading-edge treatment options, including clinical trials that prioritize your specific cancer. Our lead thoracic surgeons are involved with translational research and have presented at national meetings to encourage collaboration and new areas of investigation for precision medicine, a mainstay that defines Sylvester. Opioid-Free Thoracic Surgery Recovery Program. Sylvester's Enhanced Recovery After Thoracic Surgery (ERATS) protocol has significantly improved and streamlined postoperative care for our thoracic surgery patients. Today, up to 65% of patients undergoing pulmonary resection are discharged without opioid prescriptions — and remain opioid-free through 90 days post-discharge. This approach has led to reduced pain, fewer complications, quicker recoveries, and shorter hospital stays.
