Also known as light therapy, phototherapy is used to treat a variety of dermatological conditions. In this procedure, your doctor uses ultraviolet B (UVB) light — the best part of natural sunlight — to treat skin conditions. Some of the conditions we treat most frequently with phototherapy include psoriasis (autoimmune disease that causes red, scaly patches) and eczema (group of conditions that cause skin to be red, itchy, and inflamed).
Who is a Candidate?
If you have psoriasis or eczema, and other treatments have been unsuccessful, your dermatologist may recommend you undergo phototherapy. Sometimes, phototherapy is also used for babies with jaundice (yellowish tinge to the skin that is caused by an excess of bilirubin in the blood).
What to Expect
Phototherapy is done right in our office. Our dermatologist uses a specialized machine to deliver precisely measured doses of UVB light to the affected areas of your skin. You will likely need to undergo several treatments before you begin seeing effects of the treatment. In some cases, your skin condition will become slightly worse before it improves through phototherapy.
