Fungi live throughout the environment and even in the human body.

They can lead to minor infections, such as athlete’s foot or yeast infections. However, if fungi get into the bloodstream, they can lead to more serious invasive fungal infections. These infections require care from expert infectious disease specialists.

Tests

Blood Tests Doctors can examine your blood to find fungi and develop a treatment plan.

Sputum Testing
For sputum testing, doctors examine samples of your mucus. This can be an effective test if you have a fungal infection in your lungs or airways.

Tissue Testing
If you have an injury infected by fungi, doctors may examine tissues from the wound for infection.

Susceptibility Testing
Doctors may take additional samples of your blood, tissue, or mucus. They will give these tissues different antifungal medicines to see which medicines may work best for your infection.

Treatments

Antibiotic Medication
These medicines kill many different types of fungi and pose few risks to your health. Antifungal medicines can be pills, creams, or suppositories.
