Botox® is the trade name for medications that temporarily weaken, relax or interrupt muscle activity. It is made from botulinum toxin, which is produced by a microbe that causes botulism, a form of food poisoning. Botox therapy is administered by injection. Other medications containing botulinum toxin are Dysport, Myobloc and Xeomin.
Though best known for its ability to temporarily banish wrinkles, Botox is also used to treat a variety of muscular and neurological conditions, including chronic migraines, overactive bladder, Parkinson’s Disease, uncontrollable blinking (blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm) and others.
