Who we are
The North Dade Early Steps Program at the University of Miami is one of 15 Early Steps programs in the state of Florida.
What we do
We offer multidisciplinary assessments and coordinate early intervention services for infants and toddlers (birth to thirty-six months of age), who either have developmental delays or who have conditions that place them at risk for a significant delay.
Early intervention services involve providers (e.g., Infant Toddler Developmental Specialists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, and Occupational Therapists) working with children and families in their natural environments. Our early intervention providers follow a caregiver coaching model: Providers guide and teach parents and other caregivers how they can use certain strategies to support their children’s learning and development during the family’s everyday routines and activities. This means the caregiver must be involved in the sessions and that children get the opportunity to practice skills while they play, eat meals, take a bath, feed the family pet, and during many more daily routines. Research has proven that repetition is key for children’s learning and development, and the goal of our caregiver coaching model is to empower those who spend the most time with children – their own caregivers – to be able to teach them continuously!
