Prostate-specific antigen – or PSA – is a protein that the cells of the prostate gland produce. The prostate gland is a gland that only men have and is located directly below the bladder. It produces the fluid that transports sperm (semen). PSA is produced by both healthy and malignant (cancerous) cells. Many men with prostate cancer also have elevated PSA. However, elevated PSA can also indicate other conditions, including prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Symptoms of elevated PSA may include:
- Burning sensation while urinating
- Difficulty urinating
- Incontinence (inability to control urine)
- Increased urgency to urinate
- Pain while urinating or ejaculating
- Pain in the hip, pelvis, lower back, or thigh
- Trouble getting and maintaining an erection
- Weak urine flow
