Oncology Nurse Practitioner Fellowship

The Hematology/Oncology Nurse Practitioner Fellow’s role at the University of Miami, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is aimed at providing specialized training in the management of hematological and oncological patients in a variety of settings to ensure optimal quality of care and gaining necessary skill sets to develop and strengthen proficiencies within the clinical setting while learning to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers. The fellowship offers training in the following tracks:

  • Hematology and Oncology
  • Adult Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy
  • Clinical Research

Requirements and Application

The Nurse Practitioner Fellow will complete rotations in a variety of clinical setting located within in all UMHC/Sylvester to include both the inpatient and outpatient settings over a period of approximately 52 weeks.

Hematology Oncology Rotation Time:

  • Hospital Orientation: 1 week
  • Didactics (Chemo/Bio & UChart/Beacon): Continual
  • Clinical Rotations: 41 weeks
  • Clinical Specialty Focus: 8 weeks
  • Vacation: 2 weeks
  • Total: 52 Weeks

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):

  1. Graduate of Master in Science in Nursing with approved APRN Curriculum or higher
  2. Florida Licensure as APRN from Florida Board of Nursing
  3. Board Certification as APRN from nationally accredited organization such as American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioner (AANP)
  4. Current Certification in BLS and ACLS, Medical Errors (HIV/AIDS & Domestic Violence done on initial certification)
  5. Excellent written & verbal communication skills
  6. Good interpersonal relationships
  7. Basic Computer Knowledge in Microsoft
  8. CITI certification upon employment

What is goal of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) Hematology/Oncology Fellowship? Page 1
The goal of the fellowship is to provide the advanced practice registered nurses with the opportunity to immerse into the specialty of hematology/oncology through a comprehensive overview of caring for oncology patients and their families. The NP fellow will gain expertise through training with clinical experts in the field.
How is the fellowship offered? Page 1
The fellowship is offered as a full time one-year training to an APRN who has been fully credentialed. The fellow is expected to participate in clinical and didactic study that encompasses the entire continuum of oncology care.
Where is the fellowship offered? Page 1
The fellowship is offered at the University of Miami, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the fellow may rotate through the satellite centers located throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
What nurse practitioner specialties are eligible to apply for the Fellowship? Page 1
Adult-Gerontology, Family, and Acute Care specialties are encouraged to apply.
What is the selection criteria? Page 1
Minimum requirements include the following:
  • One year or less as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Minimum of one-year bedside nursing experience
  • Hematology oncology experience as a registered nurse or during advanced practice clinical rotations preferred.

Is a permanent nurse practitioner position guaranteed after the completion of the one-year oncology fellowship? Page 1
The duration of employment is for one year upon acceptance of the fellowship program. Once the fellowship is completed there is no guarantee for permanent employment within the university.
What should I expect during the interview process? Page 1

Once search process for NP fellows begin, you will be contacted initially for a phone interview, if selected then the candidate will proceed to a panel interview, followed by a collaborating physician interview.

Candidates selected for a panel interview will meet with nursing administrators, APRN’s, faculty and staff. Business attire is highly recommended.

What stipend or benefits are offered while in the NP fellowship program? Page 1
The fellow will be a full-time employee at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center with a stipend. A benefits package is offered that includes:

  • There is no financial assistance provided for relocation or housing expenses.
What are the requirements for successful completion of the Oncology Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program? Page 1
  • Participates in 360° peer review process.
  • The APRN fellow is expected to complete all competencies and training specified for all nurse practitioners working at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami.
  • Successful completion of ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Course.
  • Attendance during weekly educational grand rounds.
  • Attendance during disease specific team meetings.
  • Attendance during educational sessions provided by department of nursing.
  • *Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP) certification prior to completion of fellowship.
  • *Publication of a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal.
  • *Speaker engagement program either locally or at a national conference
  • *Develop and implementation of a quality/process improvement project.
*Must be completed to in order to graduate. Fellows are given one study day per week to work towards requirements.
What living arrangements are offered for nurse practitioner fellows? Page 1
Miami offers many options for housing that include apartments either on or off campus with use of discount public transportation to the medical campus. Parking on the medical campus is available at an additional cost.
What is the nurse practitioner fellow’s work schedule? Page 1
Typical schedule for the nurse practitioner fellow is:
  • Monday-Friday
  • No weekends, with the exception of requests made by Sylvester Administration
