The Dr. Larry J. Singerman and Dr. Stephen G. Schwartz Research Scholarship enables medical students to become immersed in a high impact research experience at a critical time during their professional education. Each selected research scholar will work with a mentor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in conducting basic, translational, or clinical research from June 1 to May 31.
Eligibility
This "in person" 12-month program is designed for students following satisfactory completion of their core clinical rotations. Research scholars are selected based on academic achievement. Although applicants may have prior research experience, students who have not previously been involved in research are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.Stipend and Benefits
Research scholars receive the following benefits:
- $43,888 annual stipend
- Allowance up to $2,500 to support travel expenses to present research work at one (1) national meeting
Application Process
A total of 5 research scholarships will be awarded annually. Each applicant must submit the following:
- Completed application
- Curriculum vitae
- Official transcripts (undergraduate and medical school)
- 2 letters of recommendation

Research scholars are expected to be based in Miami and assume responsibility for their research project during the year. This includes working closely with the mentor to refine the research aims and design, data collection, and data analysis. It is expected that the research will result in an original manuscript for submission to an appropriate peer-reviewed journal and a conference abstract submission. Each research scholar will present his/her research work at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Annual Residents’ Day Meeting. Disbursement of stipends will be contingent on satisfactory progress through the program.
