The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute's Teleophthalmology Research Fellowship enables medical students, ophthalmologists, and optometrists to explore cutting edge medical technology and innovative models of care, shaping the future landscape of eye care. This in-person research opportunity enables the applicant to be on-site at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami for one (1) academic year, beginning in June of the year awarded. Areas of research include, but are not limited to, creation and evaluation of disruptive technologies (such as extended reality, artificial intelligence, biosensors, and new models of virtual care) in clinical settings and in ophthalmic education.
Program
The program focuses on researching the applications of information and communication technologies (ICT) in ophthalmology. It offers the possibility of translating research projects into clinical care and medical education programs. Fellows benefit from the exposure to a broad range of ophthalmic specialties and faculty at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. This provides knowledge and experience in adopting disruptive technologies such as extended reality, artificial intelligence, biosensors, and new models of virtual care into clinical settings as well as in ophthalmic education. Additionally, they develop experience in biostatistics and manuscript writing, allowing them to hone their skills for publishing original research and present findings at national and international ophthalmic and telehealth-related conferences, under the guidance and supervision of Bascom Palmer faculty. Our interdisciplinary approach, with our UM partners, catalyzes the fellow’s teamwork and networking capabilities in an agile working environment. Their exposure to research, clinical, and administrative scenarios enhance their project management experience as coordinators of their projects, and it allows them to create innovative workflows with guidance every step of the way. A stipend is offered to offset living expenses.Eligibility
The 12-month program is designed for students following completion of their second, third, or fourth year of medical school as well as for ophthalmologists and optometrists. Research scholars are selected based on academic achievement. Although applicants may have prior research experience, students who have not previously been involved in research are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted from applicants inside and outside the United States. There are no citizenship requirements, but those who are not US citizens must have and maintain an appropriate visa (all visa matters must be handled by the applicant).Stipend and Benefits
Research scholars receive the following benefits:
- $43,888 annual stipend
- Allowance up to $5,000 to support travel expenses to present research work at a national meeting

A total of 1 research scholarship will be awarded annually. Each applicant must submit the following:

The selected scholar will be expected to:
- Work in-person with a mentor on-site at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s center located on the UM’s medical campus in Miami, Florida (1501 NW 9th Ave, Miami, FL, 33136, USA).
- Conduct translational research on the use of disruptive technologies applied to ophthalmology, virtual care, and ophthalmic-related education.
- Proactively design and manage research projects as coordinators.
- Integrate research projects into clinical settings by streamlining innovative workflows.
- Develop experience in biostatistics and manuscript writing.
- Publish original research.
- Present findings at national/international ophthalmic and telehealth-related conferences, under the guidance and supervision of Bascom Palmer faculty.
- Foster community outreach through various institutional initiatives.
