The prostate is a gland found only in males. It makes some of the fluid that is part of semen. Prostate cancer develops when cells in the prostate gland start to grow out of control. Each year, 288,300 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Men can be screened for prostate cancer using a blood test called a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test. When prostate cancer is detected early, there is a 98% chance of long-term survival and only a 25% likelihood of survival when found later.
What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?
Screening is important because most early prostate cancers do not have any symptoms. Here are some symptoms to look for:
- Frequent urination
- Weak or interrupted urine flow or the need to strain to empty the bladder
- The urge to urinate frequently at night
- Blood in the urine
- New onset of erectile dysfunction
- Pain or burning during urination, which is much less common
- Discomfort or pain when sitting, caused by an enlarged prostate

Men should have a conversation with their primary care provider about the potential benefits and risks of getting screened for prostate cancer.
How is prostate cancer screening performed?
Screening is a process used to look for cancer in people who have no symptoms. The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test is a blood useful for detecting prostate cancer.
