The American Cancer Society privately funds a program aimed at expanding and strengthening the cancer research workforce by increasing the number of researchers from a variety of groups in the field. The program includes a 10-week summer immersion in hands-on, innovative biomedical research and clinical shadowing with exceptional faculty members from multiple disciplines, along with year-round activities.

As a result of intensive research and mentorship, ACS interns will exit the program with increased awareness and preparedness for post-baccalaureate studies and career training in the field of oncology.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Rising sophomore, junior, or senior at a Florida institution of higher education
  • Full-time student
  • Member of a group that is underrepresented in science and medicine and/or from an economically disadvantaged background
  • Interested in a STEM discipline and career in cancer-related research (science, technology, engineering, and medicine)
  • In good academic standing, with an overall grade point average of at least 3.0.

Applicants are ineligible for the internship program if their bachelor’s degree is awarded before the program ends (program runs from May through May the following year). Interns may not be enrolled in any summer course concurrent with the internship.

Program dates: May 19 to July 25, 2025 (move-in May 18th)

All application materials must be submitted by the application deadline. Required materials to complete the application include:

  1. Completed online application
  2. Answers to short answer questions available for download on the first page of the online application
  3. Your curriculum vitae or resume
  4. Your unofficial transcript(s)
  5. Two letters of recommendation emailed to dicr@miami.edu
